Dr. Pulsaurus · Physiology · 4 calculators
Dr. Pulsaurus works in a sports-physiology lab with a treadmill, a heart monitor tracing a beat and a teaching skeleton that is, naturally, a dinosaur. The sign on the wall says what Dr. Pulsaurus says about every number in this department.
The calculators here are screening estimates. Body mass index compares weight with height and cannot tell muscle from fat; body surface area comes from an empirical formula in height and weight; basal metabolic rate comes from equations fitted to population data; and heart-rate training zones are percentages of an estimated maximum. Each is useful for a first look, and none of them is a diagnosis.
Hence the sign: numbers screen, doctors diagnose.
“BMI is a screening number only: it can't tell muscle from fat.” — Dr. Pulsaurus
