Estimating concrete block and mortar quantities for a block wall.

Concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls are built from modular blocks, most commonly a nominal 8×8×16 inch unit — "nominal" because that size already accounts for a standard 3/8 inch mortar joint, so the actual block itself is slightly smaller than 8×8×16. Wall area divided by one block's face area gives a first-pass block count.

Blocks are almost always laid in running bond — each course offset by half a block from the one below — rather than stacked in straight vertical columns. Running bond isn't just visual: it distributes vertical loads across more of the wall below and avoids long continuous vertical mortar joints that would otherwise be a natural crack line.

Key formula

Wall area = Length × Height
Block count ≈ (Wall area ÷ one block's face area) × (1 + waste %)

Notes & limitations

  • Real walls lose some blocks to cuts at corners, openings, and course-height adjustments — the waste margin here is a planning allowance for that, not a precise cut list.
  • Mortar quantity is commonly estimated at roughly one 80 lb bag per 30–35 blocks for a standard 3/8 inch joint, though this varies with joint thickness and mason technique — treat it as a rough materials-run estimate, not an exact yield.
